About
Generating data, related to different disciplines, is continually increasing. Social media, online scientific literature, video material, click and interaction patterns, financial transactions, customer behavior, sensors and scientific instrumentation are examples of important data sources. The ability to utilize data will aid government efficiency, improve healthcare quality, steer innovation in business, promote more effective law enforcement. Extracting information and knowledge from data has become a main driving force for scientific discovery and innovation. We can fully employ these vast amounts of data if we have the methodologies to store and process it and turn it into valuable and accessible information. It employs techniques and theories drawn from many fields within the broad areas of Mathematics, Statistics, Information Sciences, and Computer Science. At its core, Data Science involves using automated methods to analyze massive amounts of data and to extract knowledge from them.

What is Data Science? Data science, also known as data-driven science, is an interdisciplinary field about scientific methods, processes, and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms, either structured or unstructured. It is the study of where information comes from, what it represents and how it can be turned into a valuable resource in the creation of business and IT strategies. The key word in Data Science is not “Data”; it is “Science”. Data science is only useful when the data are used to answer a question. That is the science part of the equation. Jim Gray, Turing award winner, imagined data science as a "fourth paradigm" of science beside empirical, theoretical, and computational science and asserted that "everything about science is changing because of the impact of information technology and the data deluge”.

IPM is organizing for the first time an advanced data science seminar bringing together experts from various aspects of data science to provide a series of topics covering the latest advances in the field of data science. The seminar will cover scientific topics from Data Science and Search Engines, Visualization of Data in Data science, Data Science for Business and Marketing, and Data Science for Bioinformatics. It also covers data science organization talks where the head of Amsterdam Data Science (ADS) center, a successful center and one of the main hub of data science in Europe, talk about ADS and how they can collaborate with IPM Data Science Group. The seminar also covers a round table about the right path of data science in Iran. The level of seminar will be suitable for graduate students, young researchers, experts from various fields of science, and companies who intend to establish interdisciplinary links with the data science. On this occasion, the participants from the academic and professional worlds will be able to easily exchange and the meeting of different but complementary know-how will allow to reflect on the new challenges raised by the data sciences, and possible solutions will have a chance to emerge.
