Maryam Sadeghi, the CEO of MetaOptima Technology, earned her BSc in Computer Engineering from the University of Science and Technology in Tehran, Iran. After moving to Canada in 2008, she completed her PhD in Computing Science from Simon Fraser University (SFU) in 2012. During this time, she received the CIHR Skin Research Training Scholarship from UBC Skin Care Center and Dermatology, which had a crucial role and impact on her professional and personal life. Dr. Sadeghi pursued her postdoctoral research as part of a common project at SFU, the Dermatology Department at the University of British Columbia, as well as the BC Cancer Agency. Her passion for addressing the current need for improved dermatology services locally and globally led her to focus on equipping medical professionals with revolutionary technologies in the field. From 2013-2015, Dr. Sadeghi was appointed as the director of the Digital Health Hub, to contribute her expertise in research, technology development and commercialization to implement creative solutions for a patient-centric strategy in digital health applications. In 2012, she co-founded MetaOptima Technology Inc. with Dr. Majid Razmara, where MoleScope and DermEngine were developed for intelligent dermatology. These mobile dermoscope and dermatology platform are designed to streamline the imaging, documentation and analysis of skin conditions and assist with enhanced detection and treatment decisions for skin cancer and other skin, hair and nail diseases. As part of the bold vision to develop innovative solutions to make dermatology intelligent, Dr. Sadeghi is currently dedicated to the ongoing implementation of Artificial Intelligent solutions in DermEngine. As part of this initiative, her primary focus is the utilization of AI algorithms as intelligent tools to assist clinical decision-making tasks supported by evidence-based results. Dr. Sadeghi is currently working on the development of the proprietary DermDroneTM project for automating data acquisition in intelligent dermatology offices by an AI-controlled drone engine, representing great improvement towards current imaging techniques by increasing technical efficiency and reducing costs while offering better access to quality care for in-need patients. As part of her scientific and entrepreneurial achievements, Maryam was recently appointed as a MITACS Research Council member to contribute her expertise for creating science-based successful technologies in Canada. She is also a Director for the Artificial Intelligence network of British Columbia (AInBC) which is established to unify, organize and catalyze the AI and Machine Learning (ML) industry and communities in BC, Canada. MetaOptima was one of 10 that were shortlisted for the 2013 BCIC New Ventures Competition, and won a $40,000 Wavefront Wireless prize package. In 2014, Dr. Sadeghi also won the Venture Prize from Coast Capital Savings.
